Functional Differences using Vitara Charts in Dossiers and Report Service Documents

Introduction

Vitaracharts library of visualizations can be used for Report Services as well as Visual Insights/ Dossier from 10.3 or higher. The visualizations work for Desktop, Web and Mobile. There are a few functional differences between the functionality in dossiers and documents. These differences are highlighted below.

The table below summarizes the differences between Dossier and Report Services Documents. Additional details on a chart by chart basis is also covered in the detailed section below.

S.No. Property Dossiers Documents

Just drag and drop attributes and metrics into the respective drop zone to display in the chart.

The metrics we place in the ‘Value’ drop zone are displayed in the chart.

The metrics we place in the ‘Tooltip’ drop zone didn’t display in the chart, but we can see their values in the tooltip. We can also set thresholds in the chart using the metrics we placed in ‘Tooltip’ drop zone.

Chart-wise differences

Most of the features in Vitaracharts has the same functionality in Report Service Documents and in Dossiers, but the way we enable/disable those features have some differences.

1. Vitara Stacked Bar/Column charts

Dossiers:

Stacked Bar/Column charts in dossiers will show two drop zones for attributes; ‘Category Axis’ drop zone and ‘Break by’ drop zone. Case 1: If we place one or more attributes in the ‘Category Axis’ drop zone and no attribute in ‘Break by’ drop zone then chart will draw series using metrics. This means metrics are stacked in the chart. Case 2: If we place an attribute in ‘Break by’ drop zone (Doesn’t matter we have attributes in ‘Category’ drop zone or not) then the chart will draw series using the attribute placed in ‘Break by’ drop zone. In this scenario stacking is done using attributes, not metrics.

Documents:

In documents chart will always draw series using attributes. This means we can stack attribute only. Metrics cannot be stacked in stacked bar/column charts in report services documents. Please refer the below screenshots.

Use Threshold metrics drop zone to place more than 2 metrics in the chart and using these metrics you can create thresholds on Top Label and Sub Label metrics. An attribute in the Small Multiples drop zone will enable Small Multiple feature.

Documents: In documents the first metric will be considered as Top Label and second metric will be considered as Sub Label. The third metrics on words chart will consider as Threshold metrics. Small Multiples feature can be enabled by using edit property window.

3. Vitara KPI Ring Chart
